Embracing Discomfort
Her Growth Collective: Week 2
Embracing Discomfort and Uncertainty.
What does this look like to you? To me, it means moving forward despite not having a clear direction or vision, knowing that the road will be bumpy and paved with mistakes but will lead you where you need to go.
What does embracing uncertainty feel like to you? To me, it feels uncomfortable! Guess where growth happens? When you get uncomfortable! Now is the time to embrace discomfort and uncertainty. Are you with me?
Confession time: I am a recovering people-pleaser and a procrastinating perfectionist who often suffers from analysis paralysis. I struggle with wanting everyone to like me, making everyone happy, doing everything the best way possible, never making any mistakes and constantly evaluating and reevaluating every move I want to make.
Not only is this exhausting, it is completely counterproductive. Also, it is all about me and my own comfort. This isn’t consistent with my mission and the tug I feel at my core: to help people feel connected and seen. If I truly want to do that, I need to embrace uncertainty and be willing to make mistakes along the way. This has been and continues to be my driving force since launching the podcast.
This rings true especially right now. There is so much happening in our world and it is easy for me to retreat and shut down out of fear that I won’t get it right. I keep reminding myself that embracing discomfort and uncertainty are good things, especially as I seek to learn more about racial reconciliation and deconstruct my own thoughts and beliefs.
Keep moving forward and leaning in. When your heart is open and you are ready to listen and learn, your next move will be the opportunity you need for growth and change no matter what move you make. Do the next right thing. Spoiler alert: any move is the next right thing since it holds the potential for teaching you a valuable lesson.
Embrace the discomfort and uncertainty of whatever it is you are facing. We are given this opportunity: for change, for growth, for reconciliation, and so much more. What discomfort do you need to embrace today?
