Feelings About Money
Her Growth Collective is all about women coming together to share their insight about a topic. There is power in using our voices, especially when we are able to add different perspectives. This collective has allowed me to lean into topics to explore more of my own feelings and expand my thoughts by reading their words. Funny coincidence (or not?!) that the week I officially launch my video series and start focusing on income producing activities to keep it sustainable is the week we examine our feelings around money!
Do you attach your worth to your income? Is your worth only validated when people are willing to pay for your services?
What’s funny is that I could easily go on a tangent right now about how you are worthy no matter what your income is (which I fully believe!), but I think that most women have no problem working for free or for lower than they deserve. For me, the struggle comes when there is an expectation to be paid. I struggle with asking for money and leaving it in other people’s hands to decide if I am worthy of that pay.
I have never been motivated by money. That sounds good in theory but what happens is that you are left in a position where you can’t pay other people for their services (services that you need), and we continue to perpetuate the expectation that work should be done for free. I struggle with feeling worthy to be paid for my talents and contributions. I don’t want to devalue people for their work, but if I don’t have the means to pay for it, I end up doing the same thing to them! If I want to support others for their work and talents, I need to get comfortable charging for mine.
Perhaps my contentment for working for free is that I never have to question if I am being paid what I am worth? Perhaps I am able to set the bar low so I never have to experience the failure of missing the mark, since without being paid, I have put very few expectations on myself or my worth.
This past week, I committed to stepping out of my comfort zone and really taking my podcast and video series seriously. Rather than calling it a “passion project,” I am stepping into the space of being an entrepreneur, raising the bar, and running it like a business.
Rather than flushing money down the drain, let’s flush out ways we can help each other achieve our goals. When we do that, it’s a win and win, and we can all succeed.
How can I help you flush out your dream? Can I help you share your story? Shine a spotlight on what makes you unique? Let’s connect and flush it out together!
