Work Life Balance

When I think of balance, I immediately think of a scale with both sides at equal weight; however, the thought of having an equal work life balance seems impossible.  Although I strive to keep my family as my top priority, daily life has me constantly needing to shift where I spend my time; therefore, the scales are always fluctuating and never achieve a perfect balance.

One of the biggest takeaways from 2020 (so far) has been learning to live in the space of “both/and.” Life isn’t meant to be “either/or.”  We don’t need to prioritize our family OR our career but rather we can learn to prioritize BOTH our family and career.

Of course, that is easier said than done.  How do we prioritize both our family and career when they are often both competing for our time and attention?

Luckily, I have some pretty awesome podcast guests. On Episode 26, Amelia Stansell shared time management and productivity tips to help balance your family and career.   What I love about her is that not only is she one of the most productive people I know but she values quality time with her family.  She lives in a “both/and” world and we can all learn something from that.

The biggest takeaway for me from our conversation was to be fully present in the moment.

We often celebrate our ability to multitask but that often gets us in trouble.  When I try to focus in multiple directions, I lose sight of all of them.

It takes time to develop the skills to set boundaries and plan our time but it’s worth it.  Life will never be a perfectly balanced scale but by prioritizing and being fully present in the moment, we can achieve satisfaction and abundance in both our personal life and careers.
